Improving home security, ideally speaking, is improved by installing a security system, but there are still a host of ways you can make your home more secure without having to spend a dollar.

1. Leave Your Porch Lights Off

You've probably learned from either your parents or the practice of your neighbours that keeping your porch light on keeps your front door safe, because it makes burglars more visible to onlookers. This argument is pretty sound, but it fails to account for the fact that most breaking and entries happen through the front door. Case and point: by keeping your front porch light on, you're increasing the visibility of those trying to maneuver your front door, and thereby making it easier for them to break into your home.

2. Stop Leaving a Spare Key Around Your Home

This is pretty self-explanatory. It's understandable if you forget to bring your home keys, but leaving an extra key around in typical places (like under neath the welcome mat) only gives others opportunities to break into your home. 3. Keep Your Shrubbery Low and Away from Windows
